Drian was a famous French artist of the Belle Epoque and Art Deco periods. He was a painter, print-maker, illustrator, fashion and theatre designer. He became a very skilled exponent of the technique of drypoint etching. Born Adrian Desire Etienne into a poor family in Lorraine, France in 1885. He attended the Academie Julian where he took the pseudonym Drian. He is best known for his fluid and exotic portraits of elegant Parisian women and theatrical interiors. He created illustrations for several periodicals including the Gazette du Bon Ton, Femina, Nos Elegances, and Harper’s Bazaar. In 1912, he worked with Paul Poiret as a fashion designer. In 1931 he designed the costumes and décor for the theatrical spectacular Le Casino de Paris. He provided the illustrations for several books. He converted an old mill complex in the countryside outside Paris which was so chic that the Duke and Duchess of Windsor eventually acquired it as their beloved pied a campagne.
