Born in 1870 in Woodford Essex, Alex Carruthers Gould was the eldest son of the famous cartoonist of the Westminster Gazette, Sir Francis Carruthers Gould.
Gould was a landscape artist who lived in Porlock , Somerset and painted the landscapes, villages and coast of Exmoor.
He is known for his ability to use oils and watercolours in an impressionistic “plein air” style displaying confidence and fluidity. He was elected to full membership of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1903.
